Not assuming anything. I'm just curious what changed to delay his arrival into SFO by 9 hours. It may have some bearing on how AA will react to his request and there may be a chance he could get some suggestions here to run by AA. Did the departure from GIG move to later? Did his routing through the US change? Did a connecting flight get cancelled creating a long layover?

LAX is a likely connection point in that journey (e.g. GIG-MIA-LAX-SFO) and if it's already in his itinerary then it should be easy to get AA to drop the last segment.

I'm also curious why LAX is an acceptable substitute for SFO, if SFO is the final destination, especially if traveling with kids.
