It is awful though to advertise people a window seat and then have their customers board only to find out they paid for something that is not there. Maybe they need to hire more IT people then? I agree their app has been a mess lately as well. United has a long way to go to become a customer friendly airline. Glad the court system is motivating them to improve. Sad they just don't do the tight thing for their paying passengers in the first place. Plenty of airlines already had this problem solved so it isn't that hard or costly.
Whether it is a waste of time depends on whether there were more productive uses of that time or resources affecting more customers. I think you would find a lot of people would have higher priorities for that IT time, especially if you (and they) think the app has been a mess lately. In my opinion, this case is a waste of court time that could be better spent on other issues and court congestion is probably a larger problem than IT time, especially since the graphics have been addressed so quickly.

I happen to like looking out the window but most people I know who select window seats do so to avoid getting smacked by people going down the aisle and to avoid having people on both sides of them. In other words, having an outboard seat is the primary consideration, not the actual window.
