Beside the cost benefit of plastic as being cheap, yellow Kerorin is a classic, there is another practical benefit of using plastic at home ofuro. Due to the humidity of ofuro, wood stools and oke (bucket) can grow molds. It is common for household ofuro area to have window slide open to outside, this is the design from the old days of ofuro tubs were made from wood. Today pretty much most people's ofuro tubs are made from plastics and eliminated mold growth in ofuro area ot the house. However, in old days it was very important that after the use, drain the tub, wipe off water droplets, open window and dry out the ofuro area to prevent mold growth.
Today, most people in Japan, especially young generation, never grew up with wood ofuro tubs at home. Some people do want fancy ofuro at home, spurge and go for wood ofuro, one made from Japanese cypress is popular. Some learn hard way by experiencing mold growth on wooden ofuro tubs. Just the reminder if you decide to go for wooden stools and buckets.
