Lightbulb How can I get Canada Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) reimbursements?

Hi there,

I had an American Airlines flight set to depart from [USA airport 1] > [USA airport 2] > [Canadian airport] today. The [USA airport 1] > [USA airport 2] leg was delayed leading to a 6 am notification today (24th) that I was automatically rebooked to a 7:00 am flight tomorrow (25th). I asked an agent to change to another flight because it would be next to impossible to make it that early to [USA airport 1] with so little notice and got another booking in the early afternoon.

I read online about APPR reimbursements but I have some lingering questions:

1) Has anyone here gone through this process and can give any general advice/things you wish you'd known
2) Given that I asked for another booking since the automatic choice was impractical, will this affect my rights? The automatic booking for 7:00 am would also have lead me to arrive 9 hours after the originally planned arrival.
3) Is the following series of actions the right move?
- Get delay reason in writing from AA
- Send message regarding APPR rules etc. to which they must respond within 30 days
- Do not accept any reimbursements other than those outlined by APPR and complain to APPR in case of non-response

Should be noted that AA told me I was not eligible for any vouchers (hotel, meal or transport due to overnight stay) and did not provide a reason why, despite the fact that I received a notification to the contrary by email and on their app. However it seems at first glance that exercising my rights in Canada makes the most sense. (I am neither Canadian nor American, but am a legal resident of Canada)

A redditor reported that they received a reimbursement with AA and APPR after many months but I'm not allowed to post links in this forum as I am a new user.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.
