I'm trying to book a return journey from AKL - ZQN, returning just before the school holidays begin, and I want to select a seat with an engine view, though all seats in rows 1-8 on the domestic A320 seem to have been blocked off. I'm assuming part of this is to reserve seats for *A and Airpoints Gold members, is there any way I can get past that? It seems strange to me also that the last three rows have also been blocked, though I certainly don't believe that's because they are being reserved for anyone.
In my boredom I also found that Air NZ seems to block lots of seats on the ex-Cathay 77Ws, I did a test booking AKL-MEL and selected multiple dates about 9-12 months ahead, only so many seats were available to pick, and rather annoyingly none of the twin seats were available, I always like to book these when travelling with my wife. Luckily the twin seats are available on NZ's owned 77Ws so I will probably pick those.
As sbiddle said, the back 3 rows are unselectable until the rego is locked in, typically two days prior.
