Gates can change and does change very frequently so when your OH checked it was a plan for T5B. Also the screen which shows the gate information is just has a gate number like 518 and many of us knows this is T5A. The screen does not says anything like T5B or T5C so staff can be mistaken especially with remote gate numberings. I doubt many people are in the T5B lounge by mistake as the way back to T5A is not that obvious and walking only if you want to stay in airside. When I'm interested I just ask the actual gate number but the wayfinder website is more upto date and better source of information.
He’s a gold card holder, so a pretty frequent flyer, and rarely has a SH from T5B. And staff shouldn’t be mistaken with the terminal at check in - they should be sending people to the right terminals. If he wasn’t such a frequent flyer, he could have missed his flight. It’s only because he is that he thought to double check when his flight didn’t show.
And the fact the way back isn’t obvious is kind of irrelevant - most people will just go to the terminal the check in staff direct them to.
