The points instead of an upgrade has happened a few time to me at Japanese CPs, most recently at CP Fukuoka and CP Kanazawa. I was given like 1k per night (had multi-night stays) and it was an appreciated gesture as they are not required to do this.
To be honest, in Fukuoka I would have preferred a slightly bigger room as the 22sqm were tight for two with luggage, but at least one gets something (e.g. as Diamond).
