Make sure you change the flight number from JL and the number to AS and the codeshare flight number. Enter your last name and first and then go to JAL manage booking page. Click edit seat selection and pick your seat. I have done this multiple times without issue. I have found that sometimes it can take a day or two to connect to JAL site and you may need to try your first name by itself and also try it with firstmiddle all one word depending on how reservation was passed on. But once you get in JAL.co.jp picking seats is easy.
I agree the above is all helpful information. The problem, however, isn't accessing booking on the JAL site, it's that certain codeshare fares that AS sells that are operated by JL don't allow for seat selection. I had a premium economy ticket SEA-NRT (
non-award) booked on the AS site operated by JL. Could not select the seats on the JAL site and gave up and just redeemed a business award for Hawaiian SEA-NRT instead. I will note that the return flight premium economy NRT-SEA (
award) booked on the AS site did allow for seat selection on the JAL website.
I will note that in my experience, JL has always been strange with codeshare fares. I have flown an AA codeshare operated by JL (non-award) in business class and could not select a meal online. When I called the JAL customer service center they said that because it was a codeshare I couldn't pre-select my meal choice.
