Make sure you change the flight number from JL and the number to AS and the codeshare flight number. Enter your last name and first and then go to JAL manage booking page. Click edit seat selection and pick your seat. I have done this multiple times without issue. I have found that sometimes it can take a day or two to connect to JAL site and you may need to try your first name by itself and also try it with firstmiddle all one word depending on how reservation was passed on. But once you get in JAL.co.jp picking seats is easy.

Thanks, but (not trying to speak for DaxOmni or others) we've tried that. I have had no trouble managing my booking on the JL site for award reservations. This was a revenue ticket booked on AS. It's four segments in P class.
I am able to bring this reservation up on JL, using my name and the AS flight number. I can see everything. When I click the select seats link, rather than a seatmap, I get a popup which says that I am not entitled to seat selection based on the fare class I am booked in. This is something I and others have encountered when booking JL as an AA codeshare. It might even be JL's intention--FTers may recall that prior to the universal partner earning chart, JL was an outlier in that the lowest booking classes for premium economy and business earned less than 100% of distance flown. (This was a rare spot where universal earning chart improved earnings on a partner!). IOW, maybe JL intends for discount PE or J bookers not to enjoy the same level of benefits as higher-fare customers.
