What is the difference between a stop-over and a connection? Is it number of hours or does a stop-over require an overnight? I recently had a 6 hr wait between flights at AMS - luckily I could carry-on my bag, but if I was forced to check it I was going to ask to check only to AMS. Would they have done that?

On Domestic flights a connection is leaving the intermediate point within four hours of landing. It is considered a stopover if your stay is scheduled longer than 4 hours. Sometimes stopovers have an additional fee, depends on the fare rules.
