The flight I'm considering is OGG-DFW (redeye) connecting onward on a domestic flight with a 8+ hour layover in DFW. Would like to have bags back to take a shower and freshen up at DFW. I understand I will need to claim bags, recheck, and go through security again later in the day and I'm fine with that.

Is this considered a good enough reason to short check? Or maybe the question is will the agents in OGG even know how to do that?
The cutoff is now 16.5 hours. The agents at OGG should be familiar with AA's rules and should allow you to short check to DFW. Honestly though may I make a suggestion? Check your bags to your final destination. Put a change of clothes and some small toiletries in your carry on. It's just easier than having to collect bags, take them with you wherever you go, and recheck. This also means you can stay airside and shower at one of the lounges if you have access (and desire to). Or makes it easier to get to a day room at a hotel if that is what you choose.
