ORD-LAX at 1:00pm, 2:35pm, 4:10pm, 6:25pm, 8:20pm.
For me (unless travelling in a large group or with kids), little value in *scheduling* the 2:35pm connection. I'd rather schedule the 1:00pm connection and 5% chance I end up on the 2:35pm flight.

So while they could likely get rebooked same day if they miss their connection, it's far from certain they'd still be in First, if that's a major priority.

Thank you all for the guidance!
I have to 1h15 drive to AVL before taking the flight so the earlier departure from there isn't ideal. Further I have check-in bags as well and only in LA then for 3 nights. If I go with the option I've mentioned then I will have to accept the risk of missed connection, and possible downgrade.
Another, less desirable, option is to drive 3+ hours to ATL or CLT and take a direct on DL or AA. I will make my decision closer to if this feels better.
