“package holidays with other airlines” is what I described and it’s most definitely been the case that I check out that morning even if the flight isn’t until the evening. As stated in one of my other comments it’s may be because it’s 01.30am but i booked a package holiday with BA to Vegas where my flight was evening flying into Heathrow and I checked out that day and didn’t not have my room until the following day so that’s maybe what’s thrown me

What you describe is certainly not « usual » and certainly not default practice. The vast majority of packages will, by default, propose you stays that cover your presence at location. Invariably you can choose a shorter stay and BAH is no exception, just use the custom trip and you can decide to not take the final « night ».
i personally think BAH is quite poor but that is not a reason as this particular element is really in line with the industry if clunkier to adapt than with many others.
