This can happen. Indeed, in such cases look for airlines who fly more than once per day or who likely can rebook you on partners that fly the same day. I had once a cancellation DPS-BJS with China Eastern and they also rebooked me 24 hours later since 1 flight per day which would have me miss my meeting - and then I asked to be rebooked 24 hours earlier which was fine. Of course annoying leaving Bali a day early but that is what it was given the 1 flight per day schedule they have.
