This will not be the first time that American Express has recorded an inaccurate SSN*. Just say that you received a letter, and it appears that American Express has an inaccurate Social Security number in their records. Ask for the department/procedure for submitting the correct number. You have no way of knowing how or when the incorrect number appeared in their records. I wouldn't even mention that aspect.

Parallel example from another bank. In this thread the poster reports that Chase told him that accounts could not be consolidated on a single login because "1 digit of SSN incorrect”
