Or should I wait til we possibly have the $300 credit, assuming that is the best we get in 2025, and then book the hotel? What is your strategy?
I would lock in the $200 credit now. Book in September for your October trip. Since you are prepaying your stay, you should get credited within a few days of booking.
If Amex refreshes the card and the $200 credit becomes a $300, credit, you could use that one too.
1) Either extend your trip and keep both FHR reservations in October
2) Cancel one of your reservations. If Amex claws back one of the credits, you really aren't out anything, because they are still crediting your for one of the two reservations.
3) If you book i n September for your October trip, and aren't able to extend your trip, use the extra $300 credit to book something in advance for 2026.
It all depends on their generosity. I don't recall exactly how Amex handled their Aspire refresh, when they changed the resort credit from $250 annual to $200 every 6 months ($400 annually), but I know I was able to use both of those credits for the same year, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility we may get 2 hotel credits in 2025.
