Wright Air has scheduled service from Fairbanks to a number of communities up north, so you don't have to charter a plane. Of the places they fly I'd similarly recommend Anaktuvuk Pass. It used to be you could catch the morning flight to AP, tool around town for part of the day (there's not a ton to do, but the museum is fantastic and you don't have to walk far to get out of town) and then catch the afternoon flight back. There were some folks doing that when I flew out of AP a couple years ago.

The Fairbank-Kaktovik flight on Wright Air is also stellar, maybe the prettiest flight I've done up there. We flew up the Canning River from Kaktovik and it's stunning.
