The good news is that the waiver has finally been issued. The bad news is that unless you're the rare (but certainly not unheard of) solo passenger to Orlando, I don't see a lot of great options for you at the moment. (I see one seat via ORD right now).
Note that per policy, UA will not issue a refund, allow you to depart from another city, or put you onto another airline until a flight cancelation actually occurs. If you're resigned to driving, check your flight status Friday night / Saturday morning and see if a cancelation has come through; the UA app should allow you to process the refund once it has. If it doesn't cancel, you can still get future flight credit for the remainder (after the BE fare) as long as you do so prior to be marked a no-show -- I'd give yourself at least an hour prior to scheduled departure.
Yes, called earlier and got a new flight Friday on all UA metal. Looking forward to surprising the boss tomorrow morning with the news. Guess who needs to take Friday afternoon off?
The new flight has zero seats together and I'm travelling with young children. Hoping the agent at the airport will work some magic because it won't be me or my wife that will be crying if we're not next to them.
