What can I do to have UA rebook me at this point without it costing me more?

Also, if hypothetically I can't get the rebook made, and I drive to ORD to catch the second leg, would UA ticket this to or would my flight be cancelled as I missed the first leg?
In your instance, I would suggest seeing if UA can get the ticket to originate in DTW/FNT/BUF or other "border" airports just drive there and park the car.

Not asked: but for those in western Ontario to then use MSN, MSP, MKE (or as suggested the drive to ORD).
