I might be late to the party, but I've shipped "luggage" via both UPS and FedEx with much success. I can tell you that the suitcases themselves receive much more wear and tear than airline use, but that is the only downside (assuming cost is not a factor). Because of this, I have a large size pelican case that for this dedicated purpose. I ship to a vacation house about once a year (there and back).
