I booked myself on Japan Airlines first class, and it was an entirely different experience.
Funnily enough I flew out on Japan Airlines first class - and the food situation was exactly the same. My mistake was ordering a special meal, as you get that and no more - you don't get to order stuff from the regular menu.
So on the way out I had to make do with a small salad, a curry with rice and a few slices of fruit, followed by breakfast: a main course of some baked beans, mushrooms, a few potato cubes and half a tomato, with more slices of fruit for breakfast. My friend who came along had the full works on JAL and still speaks of the meal today, it was quite a spectacle! (He couldn't believe the number of courses, as they served everything on the menu in order). His breakfast was much more substantial too.
