Yes queues for check-in are the most variable part of the T5 airport journey, which is why HBO is preferable wherever possible.

One point on your boarding comment though - you say you arrived at the gate 15 minutes before boarding, which I assume means before boarding started. Ultimately, however, it's not when boarding starts that matters but when gates close. That's T-20 minutes for BA. I would always use the deadlines as your guiding measure when working back for timings.
