CE cabins will shrink and expand greatly until OLCI, and then at OLCI, plus say 2 hours, you can get a clear view as to whether CE is going to expand or contract - that, though, is too late for Avios purposes other than that you would know that the Avios cost is then sunk. Obviously one factor is the fare difference on your commercial ticket (presumably substantial) but it could be a case that you should go for a low cash, high Avios redemption. You may also be on a route with lots of last minute changes so even if it doesn't look good for FCOD now, at OLCI, at midnight, then during tomorrow something happens, and you can get the one available seat.
