Arlanda Express Luggage Express for SAS customers

Arlanda Express (the express train from Stockholm Central Station to Stockholm-Arlanda airport) has introduced something they call "Luggage express" for those travelling on SAS from Arlanda, and using Arlanda Express to get to the airport.

You can drop off your bags in their "Lounge" at Stockholm C at no extra charge (the train ticket isn't really cheap...), if you do it sufficiently early and within their opening hours.
The opening hours are 0800-1500 seven days a week, and you need to drop off the luggage:
  • The day before (0800-1500) for departures before 1500
  • Before 1200 (so 0800-1200) for departures from 1500 on (so 1500-1755)
  • Before 1500 (so 0800-1500) for departures from 1800 on
  • No outsize luggage and not applicable for US flights or China flights. (The latter is not really a problem since SAS doesn't fly to China anymore.)
I guess this service will mostly appeal to those who visit Stockholm as an alternative to keeping your luggage at your hotel. If you're planning half a day of sightseeing in central Stockholm before your flight, the central station may be on your way, even if you're not staying at an hotel close to the central station. I could also see this being useful for some who arrive in the morning on a ferry, and have a flight later in the day.

On the other hand, these time limits means that this service is not really interesting for those who live in Stockholm, except in some circumstances, since the whole point of Arlanda Express (as opposed to the cheaper bus or commuter train alternatives) is that you can leave central Stockholm, and go to the train station, rather late.

A Swedish forum mentions that they've had a trial period before this announcement and that there have been some problems with delayed bags and "soft bags" not accepted. Not sure if those were "teething problems" that have now been solved. I guess we'll get more reports in the coming months.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on FT before, but SAS also has a collaboration with Arlanda Express which means that an Arlanda Express ticket is included in your ticket if you travel ARN-VBY or vice versa, currently until 31 October. You need to have the SAS app installed to get the train ticket.

Presumably, this is to deter any competitor to open up the Visby to Stockholm-Bromma route, which was closed down when BRA closed down their network and started to fly as a wet lease operator to SAS. I guess we'll see if SAS continues this beyond 31 Oct, or if they think that the point-to-point travelers between Stockholm and Visby have forgotten about the good old days at Bromma by then.
