To put it another way. It's not that there are changes to Aeroplan status starting Jan 1, 2026. They are instead introducing changes retroactive to Jan 1 2025. (We thought we were earning benefits to be used in 2026, but we weren't. That is how I read it. Although about upgrade credits, there is also rollover.
On your second point, they will argue that they had never announced "benefits" for 2026, that there never was a guarantee that these would remain the same as in 2025. But yes, it is disingenuous. This said, they did worse in the past, in that respect.
