However, does that still include a bonus for higher fare classes? In which case it takes away any incentive to book anything more than basic economy.
Similarly, the fact that a business class fare on AC accrues SQC at the same rate of 4 SQC to 1 CAD as an economy fare also takes away any incentive to book business if one is a relatively frequent traveller.
Also, living in Europe the fact that AC doesn’t actually tell you the conversion rate for CAD doesn’t help either. For my flying so far this year, what I’ve received in SQD doesn’t actually reflect the CAD value (lower) of what I paid. Although, having requalified for 50K I didn’t bother pursuing it. Furthermore, I’m not eligible for an Aeroplan credit card since I live in Europe and that takes away another way of accruing SQC.
Overall, I just find this new program far too complicated. I just want a program where if I fly X amount I get Y miles and after a certain time I get status. The current program could have been simpler, but was clear and transparent. As a result, after over 20 years of being 50K I’m not sure I’ll continue with AC after next year. I’m happy to fly the miles and do a reasonable amount of spending, but when it’s made overly complicated and less transparent, as is the case here, it may well be time to look elsewhere.
I misread the guidance - which shows how overly complicated it is. So now Star partners convert from 5 points to 1 SQC. This definitely rules out the program for me from next year. I could definitely have requalified for at least 50k in 2027 if it was 1 distance point to 1 SQC, plus the AC spending. But massively reducing earning possibilities with Star partners just completely rules out AC for a non-Canada-based flyer. Which may well be what AC executives want. That’s fine. I can take my business elsewhere. We have of course seen them backtrack on decisions in the past. And there may well people at AC reading this forum right now and listening. But moving from 1 : 1 points on distance on Star Alliance partners to 5 points to 1 SQC effectively rules this program out for me now. It/s been a good run over the last 20 years and I’ve enjoyed it. But I’m perfectly happy to go elsewhere. Will be looking out for other Star Alliance status matches over the next few months.
