I guess we all are aware that "for life" statuses exist as long as the airline, or whoever takes control of it someday, do not decide to scrap them or remove the associated benefits. I'd factor in a significant risk factor in any investment decision where the expected return is such a status.
FB has reiterated a number of times that PFL is not going anywhere, and their actions wrt the changes to rollover XP show that they are committed to it for now, so I would myself certainly consider any reasonably short-term (small number of years) actions to keep the status. Starting from zero, though, 10 years is a long time for things to change.
