I've not been in this exact situation before, but I would've assumed that BA's influence over the tickets here is now quite limited and that this was effectively something you'd need to negotiate directly yourself.

The best analogy I've got here would be baggage allowances where BA would have no special powers but would likely consider reimbursement of additional cost to meet the provision of the original booking.
