Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton {US-UT}
Starting a new property-specific thread. Mods, feel free to combine with the Utah-specific forum, if necessary.
Booking:
We booked a 1K standard room on a combination of points and FNCs. Using the award redemption system, we were limited to a standard room. There are “suites” that face a pool, but the main differentiating aspects are the view and a larger balcony. The HooDoo has casitas, but they are technically a separate property called “The Casitas at the HooDoo” so upgrading to them is not possible, or at least that’s what the front desk told us.
Pre-Arrival
One week before arrival, we received an email from the concierge welcoming us and offering their services. We didn’t engage them further, but the proactive outreach was appreciated.
At T-72, no upgrade had arrived, despite availability in the booking system.
We attempted to use e-Check-In to obtain our digital key. We reached out to inquire about an upgrade. We were told they were “fully booked” and no room changes were possible. The Digital Key arrived around 12:30PM on the day of arrival.
Arrival
There is no valet service. Parking is in a small lot out front. Diamond parking was readily available.
At check-in, there was no mention or recognition of our Lifetime Diamond Status. They congratulated us on celebrating our anniversary which was a nice touch. They explained the $30/day F&B credit and where it was eligible for use.
Room:
We were given a room on the 3rd floor (top floor), immediately adjacent to the elevator lobby. My room preferences are “far from elevator”, but it is what it is. The room doors are all in shared alcoves off of the main hallway. I thought this would help reduce noise from the elevator lobby.
Our 1K room was nicely appointed with plenty of lighting, outlets, and other expected furnishings.
The fridge was extremely small and maxed out at 6 bottles of water. It also had a “snooze” and “super cool” function, but otherwise struggled to chill beverages to <40 degrees.
The bathroom was extremely large with a full walk-in shower with hand-held showerhead. The bathroom lighting was split into two circuits… one was direct lighting, and one was indirect. Interesting setup, but it looked great.
The sink was horribly designed. It was extremely shallow and small. The facuet outlet was less than 3” from the edge, so you couldn’t wash your hands in their entirety or fill a water bottle. It also had a flat bottom, so any solid debris would get stuck and require pushing with your hands toward the drain.
A/C was controlled by a newer Toshiba thermostat. Upon arrival, we found the room to be quite warm. We noticed no response from the thermostat, which was displaying 68 degrees. We called downstairs and the FDA said the systems are “designed to be silent” and we need to make sure the system is set to max speed, not “auto”. To our surprise, the room cooled off and the HVAC system was certainly silent. Great concept, but I need some white noise at night. It was alarmingly quiet in the evening/overnight. We could hear the “ding” from the elevator that was 30’ feet and 3 walls away.
The balcony was 18” wide and essentially useless. We had a nice view of the dumpster which was promptly emptied by a large trash truck every morning at 5:00AM.
Pool
The pool was beautifully designed, nestled between two wings of the building. Despite direct sun and >100F temps, the water was frigid cold.
We arrived at the pool around 2:50PM. We asked for food/beverage service, and the server said “my shift is over at 3:00PM. You need to go to the restaurant if you want anything.” The restaurant is high end ($50+ entrees) and walking inside in a towel and flip-flops is certainly off-putting.
Umbrellas are operated only by maintenance. We asked the server about opening an umbrella, and we were instructed to go to the front desk. They promptly sent out a maintenance technician who opened the umbrella. However, when the afternoon breeze picks up, the maintenance team swarms the pool deck and lowers all of the umbrellas. During our 90 minutes at the pool, they lowered/raised the umbrellas 3 times. When the umbrellas are down, it’s dangerously/painfully hot to sit outside. The sun hits you from above and is reflected off the white concrete.
There were two roving “pool attendants” who would bring towels and bottles of water. However, they were not available for any F&B service.
F&B
All of the F&B is centered around the onsite restaurant, Josie Wyatt’s. Over our 5-night stay, we ate there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is excellent, well priced, well designed, and with appropriate portion sizes. The drinks are comically expensive… their version of an Old Fashioned is a 1.5-oz pour in a plastic cup with an enormous ice cube and was $16.
The daily F&B credit posted correctly each time.
Other
The “premium” wifi was almost unusably slow and unstable. But, cellular service in Moab is spotty, as well. This may be more of a factor of being 100+ miles from the next city. Not sure.
Onsite laundry is available and is $3 per wash or dry load. The machines were in great condition and the room was very clean. Detergent is for purchase at the lobby grab-and-go pantry, and is covered by the F&B credit.
Housekeeping tended to the room each day and did an excellent job.
We visited during Moab’s low season (late summer) and believe the hotel was not at capacity. The parking lot was never full, the pool was never full, and we never saw more than 2-3 parties at the restaurant. My gut tells me they shut down parts of the hotel limiting the burden on utilities, housekeeping, etc. which also limits upgrade availability. The pool is surrounded on 3 sides by balconies, and we never saw an open curtain, open door, guest, or furniture in-use on any balcony.
Overall
This is a beautiful Curio property centrally located in Moab. It’s within walking distance of the entirety of the downtown area. The F&B offering (outside of pool service) is strong. The rooms are nicely appointed and extremely comfortable.
We had some minor issues, but wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone visiting the Moab area.
