Agree, ofcourse having insurance helps. I referred more to risk of not getting full or any coverage from UA. I've never been denied coverage from UA but I don't know if others have been denied in the past. Don't have a good sample size. So I've never tempted fate and taken the risk unless they truly abandoned me. Which has only happened a few times. When you said that you always just book your own hotel, it can give people the impression that this is always the recommended approach. If the risk is very low then I agree. But if it isnt, people should be aware of the risk and make an informed decision. I'd much rather not wait in line, get to a better hotel faster, get a better meal, but I'm not willing to risk a few hundred bucks. There also also times where UA put me up in a much nicer hotel than I would have ever picked too.
