When flying, I've typically put my wallet, watch, ring, and money clip inside a zippered pocket in my jacket. If you won't be wearing such a jacket, I suggest placing your valuables inside of your carry-on, perhaps in Ziploc plastic bag.
My understanding is that there is video surveillance at TSA checkpoints -- in part to deter theft by staff.
