Not only would you be on the hook for any additional BA carrier surcharges, you'd also have to pay the higher UK APD, and this would only get you to PE, on LHR-BOS no less, which is one of the shortest TATL flights out there.

If you want to upgrade the return I'd just call AA and see what the fare difference is to switch to the AA metal flight back and try to use a SWU on that. At least it would get you to J.
Totally agree. Depending on when the flight is and what inventory is available, the up-fares to W, J (and F) on the westbound leg can be roughly the same as the taxes when economy is booked on the eastbound leg.
