You will need a passport scan before entering security at T5. You can just use a self service kiosk, choose the passport identification option, enter the code of your entry airport in the USA, and be careful to enter your passport carefully on the photo page as per the screen instructions. If that goes ok then just proceed past security.
I've used this service many times and never had a problem with them.
The only issues I've had were when BA refused to issue an online boarding pass meaning I had to cancel the bag collection.
As a US passport holder I also have to, frustratingly, line up at a desk for a "document check" every time which can take a while. Are you saying I don't need to do this? I can just go to any self service kiosk?
