I don't think it's unusual at all for AA to call and ask for a downgrade (I have heard of instances of FAM's bumping pax in FC and AA offering a smorgasbord of generous offerings in return). The fact that they need that seat places all of the negotiating power in your hand. How you leverage that is up to you.
