I think the time savings is perhaps the most notable part here, but still–status is really only as good as your ability to use it with reasonable frequency.

Yeah, the Amex Plat isn't
a bargain, but you could get that and 1-4 additional credit cards for the same Annual Fee as the Luxury Card. I don't really see where any
outsized value comes from other than the time savings of accumulating 50,000 FOPs instantly (and that's if you're invited by JAL to begin with).

Tax payments are basically how I run up my MQD count at Delta each year. The JP Amex cards give $1 MQDs per 1000 yen, so that cuts down on that requirement significantly.
