Like long enough that I shouldn't have to worry about timing at all, or like...still cutting it close enough that I should be trying my best to sneak my backpack onto the first flight? (the problem is how strict some airlines are on weight, the actual size definitely always fits in the overhead). Thank you!
Why would you be forced to check your bag in the first place? Is it due to size, or due to weight? If due to weight, I've always, especially when traveling with someone which makes this process easier, hid the bag somewhere while checking in so they can't see it or weigh it. If you're flying with someone, have them stand somewhere out of sight holding the overweight bags, and then each of you takes turns checking in with a carry-on that is of the right size and weight, or even nothing at all. Then swap positions.
If traveling alone, find a locker or some safe place you can store the problem bag while you're checking in.
