I've never been to Indonesia.
I have huge interest in visiting before i expire, and Bali specifically. It beckons us in a more siren-like way than Sumatra, Komodo, Sumba, Jakarta, etc.
While it bums me out - ever so slightly - to hear all the stories about how shocking the changes in Bali have been, that it's all been ruined by over-development, pollution, tourism, crowds, etc, and how quickly this devastation has ensued......
I have to say my interest is still very high.
I believe it could still be an absolutely magical trip for anyone who hasn't the first clue how things 'used to be' there.
In short, first-timers. Like my wife and I. And at our age, we tend to mostly putz around on property.
We have a big 25th ann trip coming up in a couple years, and Bali is near the top of the list for two to three weeks of exotic splendor.
While Greece is also under heavy consideration (more remote islands, anyway), as well as Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and some others, we're really enticed by Bali.
And trying not to be too swayed by the oft-repeated notions that Bali is now Dubai or Mykonos or Cabo. I.E. too crowded, harried, polluted with the IG crowd, etc
Some of the hotels there really call out to us, look like the kind of resorts we'd love.
In particular, Raffles, Bulgari, Tanah Gajah, Amanjiwo, RC Mandapa.
