I think mistytalon means that you can’t send an SMSs only to a single recipient (with iMessage) while keeping iMessage on in general?
There used to be an option where you pressed and held on the iMessage bubble within the first minute, and it allowed you to ‘Send as text message’. IIRC, it might have become an option which only showed up when the message was ‘Not delivered’, which would make it useless in the situation misty described…
(Not that I use iMessage anymore; WhatsApp dominates outside the US, maybe Line or WeChat for specific markets.)
