I first stayed overnight in Doha back in 2017, long before transit passengers discovered there is more to discover beyond the airport. Qatar has invested a lot in building new tourist attractions since then, and I returned in 2025 to find out whether it is worth a trip to Doha on its own.
Visiting during Ramadan comes with its own challenges. Muslims don't eat or drink during the day until sunset. Restaurants and even convenience stores at the metro station are shut during the day, except a rare few ones in the international areas that are only open for take-out. Attractions generally open in the morning but will shut around lunch time, but re-open again at sunset and well into the night.
While it may seem sightseeing will be limited during this time of year, I actually ended up being able to cover a lot more since I kept the outdoor walking tours for the afternoon when the city shuts and then shift all the museum visits to the evening.
West Bay is the glitzy new financial district with plenty of stunning skyscrapers. It's a bit like Dubai but with less people.
Now let's go there and have a closer look. Since my last visit, they're built a new metro system with several lines. Fares are super cheap at 2 riyals only, or a little more than a USD quarter.
I'm slowly updating my website with the new photo set. Check it out here :
