I first went to Bali in 1990 and stayed at just-opened Amandari, a life-changing experience. Ubud was indeed a tiny village. We also stayed in those days at the Bali Oberoi on Legian Beach, a fantastically pretty place. The last time we visited Bali, five years ago, it was to embark on a cruise ship which sailed to Singapore via Celebes, Borneo and a few other places. Frankly, Bali was hellish, choked with traffic, full of junk food joints like McDonalds and KFC, full of rowdy tourists, bitterly disappointing and disillusioning. I'd never go back unless absolutely necessary. To answer the question, I'd choose something near the port of Benoa, which probably means Nusa Dua and environs, the Four Seasons or St Regis, everything you need and no need to go out.
