The flight had open seats for sale at the time I received the email.
all flights usually sell more seats than available factoring in no shows and last minute changes/ cancelations. On southwest I’ve been on flights where college basketball teams have travelled. I could see a large tour group or e ent cresting a surge in purchasing on this flight.
Also remember business have contracted fares with southwest. You could have a large travel group onnthis flight thst just booked.
ive seen this happen with other airlines on offering schedule change for vouchers trying to do this before the flight rather than a gate announcement.
They ask for a bid from PAX to change flights and then decide at the gate.
