AA SCL-MIA 9:50pm Departure, July 2025
Dinner, Breakfast
787 (3-class)
Business Class, 5L
Very sub-par Flagship Business return from South America. The flight attendant on my side of the cabin barely understood English (I had a very difficult time ordering a LaCroix) and she couldn't have cared less about providing a nice flight experience. I didn't really like the menu options but pre-ordered the chicken. I don't eat bacon so I knew I would not eat the mashed potatoes - was looking forward to selecting a good roll or two, well she did not even let me choose and put an awful, dry multigrain roll on my dinner tray before it even came out. Plastic wrap was still covering the small plate and salad. I know that not even the yogurt/granola/fruit breakfast is edible based on previous AA Flagship Business flights out of South America so I skipped the airplane breakfast and had a much better one in the MIA Flagship Lounge.
The nice thing was, because it was clear there would be no enjoyable experience I'd be missing out on by sleeping, I slept better/longer on this flight than I typically do, for most of ~12-5am. Interestingly, I tend to sleep better on the 787 with the forward/backward seat layout despite that it's an older aircraft and offers much less privacy. I think it's that the seat gets really flat allowing me to get on my side easily and mechanical noise seems less prominent.
I don't want to call it a disappointment, especially having gotten the most sleep I could given the length of the flight (~8 hours), but I will definitely say there is room for improvement. I feel like I paid too much of a premium for what it was.
Menu
Pre-ordered the chicken. The meat was decently flavorful and not *too* dry. The sauce consistency was way off - very coagulated, practically a Jell-O consistency. The shrimp starter was ok. Can't comment on the bacon potatoes since I don't eat bacon. I planned to eat the roll as the carb, unfortunately the flight attendant plopped this terribly dry, crumbly one on my tray prior to serving rather than bringing around the basket to make a selection. It wasn't even warm.
I always look forward to the sundae. This was the worst I've had because it arrived rock hard and it was minutes before I could even get one spoonful. It was so cold the hot fudge cooled. Once it finally softened, the taste was good. Definitely still worth indulging.
Skipped the bad plane breakfasts that come out of South America. Instead had two eggs made to order in the MIA Flagship Lounge and the mediocre bagel, but I love a bagel and egg breakfast so all good. Fruit selection was limited but the honeydew and mango was good. The watermelon ginger wellness shot was a nice touch. Also had a black coffee that wasn't a good batch. Then a nice shower. (I will usually opt for a long layover if there's a Flagship lounge - no regrets on that choice.)
