There will be no herd thinning. Its likely we'll see a lot of people getting unexpected status extensions (as has happened anyway in recent years) to keep the number of elites steady. In particular I suspect a lot of Golds will be extended because BA will have done the maths and noticed that there will be too many Silver members if a lot of Golds are downgraded.
While I may be a beneficiary of such an extension, I can think of no simpler way for BA to upset those who do end up shelling out £20,000 (or thereabouts) for Gold status.
