Not the best…depending on the day, sidewalks outside would smell like urine and there would be blobs of fecal matter (not sure if human or animal). Definitely unhoused folks around the surrounding blocks. But I will say that I never felt unsafe during the day. 10+ min walk to Union Square, about 15 min walk to Powell BART station. About 20 min walk to Chinatown but there are some elevation changes if you take the wrong streets. 15-20 min walk to FiDi.
The routing matters here, especially to BART . . . walk east on Post then down Powell and it's a bit unpleasant. Walk down Jones and you'll encounter some of the worst blocks in the tenderloin.
Jones is farther west than I personally would want to stay.
