The opening is part of a wider redevelopment project at Terminal 2, which began over a decade ago, with an initial extension opening in 2021. The current phase involves updating the original part of the terminal to match the newer section in both design and functionality.

Once the project is completed later this year, Terminal 1 is expected to close, and more than 70 per cent of passengers at the airport will pass through the expanded Terminal 2.

Further additions are planned in the coming months. These include new retail and hospitality outlets including Chanel, Grindsmith by WH Smith, a Fever Tree cocktail and champagne bar, and the Great Northern Market — a food court featuring a variety of street food vendors.

Infrastructure improvements are also underway, including 13 new flexible aircraft stands and boarding gates. A connecting corridor between the security area and the departure lounge will feature a chandelier installation inspired by the Venetian-style chandeliers that once hung in Terminal 1 during the 1980s and 1990s.

The airport says the redevelopment is in its final stages, with further updates expected later in the year. There is no news about BA’s move to T2, if it ever happens.
It may just be poor reporting in this particular piece but I thought the plan was for (some of) Terminal 1 to remain, even if mostly as a headhouse for what we currently call T3?
