I don't drink much so haven't been in one for a while, but the state-run ABC stores (hard liquor) in Virginia actually scan the barcode on the back of your VA driver's license to verify age. I'm not sure if the ABC stores even accept passports as ID, even though they are much more difficult to fake than DLs.
