I think if I was a gold ( and have done so before getting Diamond status) I would pay for the Exec lounge to guarantee lounge access ( £60 for 2 nights is pretty good) and not having to worry about any potential upgrades until arrival . If I did not care about access or the difference was a lot more then i would not.
Some afternoon snacks and evening snacks/drinks will pay for the difference in price

( Have not stayed at the Conrad bangkok so not sure on the upgrade chances as a gold)

As a frugal person who's stayed a LOT of nights at that hotel (and a lifetime diamond) - pay for the upgrade. You'll be lucky to get a corner room upgrade as a gold.
