AS does not always give free stopovers in the USA any more so you may be paying for two awards. AS not making F available transcons reasonable rates is not particularly a new problem, and has routinely been bad value for a very long time.
Exactly' I wasn't sure, as EWR is not an AS hub, but it does indeed appear that free stopovers are another casualty in the race to the bottom.

I was fine flying AS Y to ANC on my last DE award instead of paying an extra lump of miles for F at “anytime” rates.
As I now qualify for Medicare, 6'2" tall, it would be tough to slum in Y for 6 hours after 9 hours on a lay flat seat - even of it is domestic F..
