AS does not always give free stopovers in the USA any more so you may be paying for two awards. AS not making F available transcons reasonable rates is not particularly a new problem, and has routinely been bad value for a very long time.

I was fine flying AS Y to ANC on my last DE award instead of paying an extra lump of miles for F at “anytime” rates.
