Although choosing a non-AS option, I decided to test adding a stopover to SAN 2 days later, which jacked the redemption to 110 miles; in other words, AS wanted more for the transcon (despite all F seats currently available) than DE TATL.
AS does not always give free stopovers in the USA any more so you may be paying for two awards. AS not making F available transcons reasonable rates is not particularly a new problem, and has routinely been bad value for a very long time.
I was fine flying AS Y to ANC on my last DE award instead of paying an extra lump of miles for F at “anytime” rates.
