Re your comments on the poor running of the scheme, I agree, but the thing is that it doesn't really cost *A that much to give people status, it raises their profile in the UK and it gets people at least thinking about taking their flights.

So although the nitty-gritty of the comps is easily taken apart by us mileage professionals (I like to think of myself as a pro ), for the average user who comes across this promotion, it would be of some interest/benefit I would think.
